Clean Up Our Mountains

Clean Up Our Mountains – mountain trails for future generations

Slovenia has 10 thousand kilometres of mountain trails, and every third Slovenian is a mountaineer. The Clean Up Our Mountains initiative brings together over 36,000 ambassadors of clean mountains and unspoiled nature. We are connected through our slogan: Let's bring back nice memories and waste from the mountains.

We have collected over 30 tonnes of waste from the mountains over the past ten years, while the movement has outgrown its initial ambitions. We build on three pillars of education in order to ensure that a trip to the mountains is responsible to nature and other people, as well as safe and pleasant.

Cleaning

Over the past ten years, mountaineers have collected more than 30 tonnes of waste - over 1 tonne in the last year alone. The waste we bring down from the mountains is separately disposed of in bins. At the 78 most frequently visited spots in our medium and high mountain range, we have mounted wooden signs, asking mountaineers to maintain a responsible environmental attitude.

Symbolically, we have also cleaned the area of the Triglav Plateaus (Triglavski podi) in the heart of the Triglav National Park on the 240th anniversary of the first climb to the Triglav. Despite snow, dozens of volunteers combined their efforts and cleaned the area around the Triglav Lodge at Kredarica and the broader area of the Triglav glacier, including its barely accessible areas, where a lot of waste had accumulated over the decades, including airplane debris, lost helicopter cargo and a new year garland.

Safety in mountains

The mountain huts are at particular risk of fire, since they are mostly wooden constructions, with limited water supplies and hard to access by firefighting units. Therefore, several huts have burned to the ground in the past few years. We have donated more than 150 automatic fire extinguisher ampoules to 52 mountain huts, which automatically detect and extinguish the initial fire.

There are approximately 700 active blaze-makers, meaning that each of them is taking care of as much as 10 km of mountain trails. We would like to pay a tribute to their selfless work for safer mountain trips. So we are holding a contest for The Best Mountain Trail for the third consecutive year. Mountaineers can vote for one of the mountain trails that are beautiful yet dangerous and in need of renovation. We donate financial means for the renovation to the blaze-makers, who maintain the trail.

Each year, mountain rescuers of the Mountain Rescue Association of Slovenia carry out more than 500 interventions. The Clean Up Our Mountains campaign financially supports the development of the sarOS programme, which helps them locate injured persons faster and thus reduce the time before professional medical care is provided.

Promoting an active lifestyle in nature

We have prepared more than 72 recommendations for family trips for mountaineers – all trails are tested, carefully selected, and mostly adapted for children.

We like to read the mountains. This is why we have equipped 10 mountain huts with Clean Up Our Mountains bookshelves, on which good manners are also presented. You can recognise a good hiker by their greeting and smile.
