Filing insurance claims after extreme weather events

Storms with strong winds, hail and heavy rain strike Slovenia from the north-west to the east of the country

According to Zavarovalnica Triglav, the storms that brought strong winds, hail and heavy rain across the country, from the west and north-west to the east, on Tuesday and Wednesday caused major damage to buildings, vehicles and farmland. According to information so far, the Komenda area was most affected by heavy winds, while hail was the main issue in and around Škofja Loka. Zavarovalnica Triglav representatives are already in the field, and the company are advising people to make sure they and their loved-ones are safe and secure during these extreme weather events and when attempting to deal with the aftermath before turning their attention to their property and to filing a claim with their insurer.

In the east of the country, strong winds caused most damage in the Ptuj area, while Ormož and surrounds saw hail and heavy downpours. According to information collected by Zavarovalnica Triglav so far, heavy rain has also affected the Cerkno and Železniki areas.

Safety and filing a claim

Once the situation has eased and it is safe to do so, you should try to prevent any further damage (e.g. by temporarily covering damaged roofs, removing dangerous objects, tree branches, etc.) and then report the damage to your insurer. Damage should be documented properly, with photographs. You should also keep all the relevant paperwork in a safe place.

Zavarovalnica Triglav customers can file claims quickly and straightforwardly:

Although the deadline for reporting damage is usually three days after it occurs, claims filed later than this are allowed in cases involving storm damage. Agricultural damage is an exception: claims must be filed as soon as possible or no later than within three days, particularly prior to harvest time.

Zavarovalnica Triglav strives to handle all cases as quickly as possible, as circumstances allow. Extreme weather events require an even stronger response and priority action on the ground. Triglav representatives will telephone customers who file their claim remotely as soon as possible to arrange the next steps to resolve the claim.

Damage caused to housing and household fixtures is covered by your home insurance. Commercial premises and other buildings and equipment are covered by fire insurance. Damage caused by trees or roof debris falling on a vehicle is covered by comprehensive vehicle insurance, namely combination B under the partial plan (fire damage and natural disasters).

Several tips can be found here to help you file claims for storm damage, while some video tips can be found here. These show you what to do in the event of a natural disaster, and how to file claims for damage to property. More information about how to protect yourself and how to act in the event of strong winds can be found in this article on the Vse bo v redu website.

Listen to warnings, stay informed and manage your risks

While we cannot prevent extreme weather events, we can take steps to be better prepared and respond effectively. The Triglav Vreme weather app can be very helpful, allowing users to activate push messages to warn them about various weather events so they can take timely action to protect themselves and their property.

The risk assessment tool in the i.triglav app can also be extremely useful in helping residents to judge which extreme weather events they are most exposed to in their region. This tool allows you to check your property’s level of exposure to earthquakes, floods, hail, lightning, and landslides.
